What About Uncle Charlie?

Apr 28, 2024    Rev. Steve Albertin

Today’s Gospel claims that Jesus is the only way to God. This is a troubling claim in a world where “Uncle Charlie” and other good folks never get to know or trust in Jesus. It doesn’t seem fair.

We often complain that if God and life were only fair, then all would be well. Of course, it is only fair when God’s sense of fairness agrees with ours. As a result, we try to play God. That is dangerous!

We deserve expulsion but God will not give up on us loving us all the way to the cross and the empty tomb.

Trusting Christ we get to let go of our trying to be God and let God be God. Therefore, the fate of the “Uncle Charlies” of this world is God’s problem and not ours.

When Jesus insists, “no one comes to the Father except through me,” He is simply reminding us that there is no other place in the world to receive good news like this.

Therefore, we have a God we can trust, a future we can embrace and Uncle Charlies for whom we can pray.
