Worship on the Second Sunday of Advent

Dec 10, 2023    Rev. Steve Albertin

Welcome to worship at King of Glory Worship and Ministry Center in Carmel, IN!

On this Second Sunday of Advent, as we prepare for our Lord's birth, let us worship the one who gives us Peace!

This week we light the Candle of PEACE. We light it knowing that worldly peace is elusive; yet we trust that God is always gently leading us into the way of PEACE. The word “Advent” means “the Coming.” God, in the form of the Babe of Bethlehem, is coming. Christ, the Prince of PEACE, will come to give us that Divine Peace that is beyond all human understanding.

If you are able, we invite you to join us for communion where you are! You may use any kind of bread and either wine or grape juice, so that you may also receive the body and blood of our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ.

We'll get started shortly! Feel free to chat with the community until then!

Today's Worship Theme:

   - “God, the Thief”

   - 2 Peter 3:8-15

   - This is the terrible and frightening truth of Advent. Yes, the END is coming. God is coming . . . like a thief in the night. His coming could be as close as our the next breath!

   - But the message of Advent is not only an ominous warning of what will sneak up on us some night. Advent surely announces that the End is coming, that this old world and its days are numbered. But Advent also announces the coming of a new world,. This is new world will be ours when Jesus “comes again to judge and living and dead.” Though no one knows the hour or the day, it will not be as a thief in the night but like the blessed arrival of . . . the police and the EMS . . . just when we thought we were doomed.

Today's Songs:

   - "Highest Place"

   - "Now the Feast and Celebration" (ELW 167)

   - "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing"

   - "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" (vs 1 & 2)

   - "The Hope of Jesse’s Tree"

   - "We Are An Offering" (ELW 692)

   - "Emmanuel"

Special Musical Offering

Today's Message

   - "God, The Thief” - Rev. Steve Albertin

       - As we say, “The only constants in life are taxes . . . and death.” Oh, how we avoid and deny this.

       - Today’s 2nd Reading has a very startling image for God in Advent. When God finally comes to wrap things up for this world, it will be like a thief!

       - There are more attractive and appealing images for God, but few are more truthful.

       - Advent surely announces that the End is coming and that this old world and its days are numbered. But Advent also announces the coming of a new world for which there is no reason to be afraid.

       - The Second Coming/Advent of Jesus will not terrorize us like a thief in the night, but will be as the blessed dawning of a new day, as a baby born in a barn in Bethlehem.

       - Because of the First Advent of Jesus we can be sure that, whenever there is the Second Advent, that whenever Jesus comes again, it will not be a time to fear. It will be a time to welcome Him with praise and rejoicing.

       - In the meantime, we live between the two Advents. God comes to us NOW in the present! Therefore, we do not have to fret or worry about the future.
